The European Commission has introduced a controversial package of measures aimed at strengthening the rights of passengers traveling by air. The Commission said the proposals were aimed at ensuring "that air passengers have new and better rights to information, care and rerouting when they are stranded at the airport." They would also clarify legal grey areas in existing regulations and introduce new rights where necessary, as well as improving complaints procedures and enforcement measures, the Commission said. Announcing the proposals, European Commission VP-transport Siim Kallas said it was important "that passenger rights don't just exist on paper. We all need to be able to rely on them when it matters, at the airport, when things go wrong."
