CFM International in September started ground testing on its LEAP-1A engine designated to power the Airbus A320neo. The LEAP-1A is the first of CFM's LEAP family of engines to begin a test program. The GE Aviation/Snecma joint venture said in a statement it will conduct "extensive ground and flight test certification program that will encompass 60 engine builds over the next three years. The program will culminate in engine certification in 2015 and first entry into commercial service on the Airbus A320neo in 2016." CFM-executive VP Chaker Chahrour noted that CFM "completed thousands of hours of component testing" in advance of starting ground testing of a full LEAP-1A engine.
