When Cathay Pacific Airways management decided the airline needed a new long-haul business class seat, it approached the design with a few key criteria in mind. There had to be plenty of easy-to-reach personal storage space, tables did not have to be stowed to change the seat to lie-flat bed mode, no passenger should have to step around or over another passenger to get in or out of his seat, and a good night's sleep had to be possible. Cathay CEO John Slosar pointed out that the typical lie-flat business seat turns into no more than a thin plank on which the only feasible position is to lie on your back. "Most people don't sleep flat on their back; we sleep on our sides. So that's what I said I wanted our passengers to be able to do" he said.
