EU member states and their airports are allowed to use body scanners to screen passengers, the European Commission (EC) decided. But it stipulated that the machines can only used under strict operational and technical conditions intended to ensure compliance with fundamental privacy rights and the protection of health.Following months of intense debate, including in the European Parliament, and body scanner trials in several EU countries (including in the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Italy), the EC in late November adopted a proposal for a legal framework governing how the machines can be deployed.
