The European Commission (EC) has opened an in-depth investigation into United Technology Corp.'s (UTC) proposed acquisition of Goodrich after its preliminary investigation indicated potential competition concerns, the EC said in late March. UTC announced in September 2011 that it intended to buy Goodrich for $16.5 billion. The EC said it is concerned that removing Goodrich as an independent supplier of fuel nozzles and engine controls, especially for smaller engines, "could result in higher input prices for engine manufacturers competing with [UTC's engine subsidiary] Pratt & Whitney. In particular, switching suppliers could take a long time and be costly for those currently sourcing from Goodrich."
