Safety officials are pushing for autonomous automobiles as the best way to avoid tens of thousands of road fatalities a year. Some city subway systems are autonomous now, and Thales will prototype an autonomous regional train in 2023. US defense forces have long flown large drones such as the Global Hawk by a combination of remote piloting and autonomous onboard systems. Small drones for many personal and commercial purposes are proliferating. When might autonomy come to commercial aviation?
