Editor: Regarding Jerome Greer Chandler's article, "Limiting Loss of Control" {ATW, 4/11, p. 37), I am amazed that there is even a debate about stall/spin recovery training. My USAF recovery training included power off stalls, power on stalls, power off spins, power on spins, unusual entry into stalls/ spins and recovery, including reverse recovery, that would have saved US 427. Sims are practical for cockpit gadget familiarization and limited flight environment familiarization, but not for flight training. [It's] cheaper but they can't replicate actual flight. We've gotten so far from practical training techniques that I doubt today's trainers really understand what flight training is all about. They train to the gadget, not to flight, and therefore every time I get on a plane I ask myself, "Does this crew really know how to fly an airplane? I mean really fly?
