Traffic gain for the whole of Europe stood at 4.6% in 2010 (table 7) comprising a modest 3.5% increase in passenger throughput at airports in Western/Central Europe and a startling 22.4% rise in Eastern Europe/ Russia/CIS. "Traditionally, it used to be the UK, Spain, Germany and France that drove traffic growth in Europe. It's a very different picture now. The growth pattern in Europe follows the evolution of global airport passenger traffic: a shift in traffic growth from West to East, from the mature economies to the emerging econ omies," Blondel said. "As a whole, the region recovered most of the traffic it lost in 2009 (5.4%) but Turkey and Russia in asereeate were responsible for half of the passenger increase at European airports last year whereas the UK and Ireland faced severe traffic losses (table 8)."
