AIRBUS HAS delivered a first upgraded Tranche 1 Typhoon to the Ejercito del Aire (Spanish Air Force), the company announced on February 25. The Eurofighter is the first of 15 being modernised through the addition of some Tranche 2 and 3 equipment, including a computer symbol generator, digital video and voice recorder, laser designator pod and maintenance data panel. The jets received hardware modifications to support the Operational Flight Program 02 upgrade developed by the Centra Logistico de Armamento y Experimentacion (CLAEX, Spain's Armament and Experimental Logistics Centre). The first jet to be handed over is the initial single-seater, serial C.16-23 '11-03' (c SS003), which was re-delivered to the air force from Airbus' Getafe facility near Madrid. This jet, plus a two-seater undergoing upgrade, will be used initially by CLAEX as test platforms to qualify the new capabilities.
