FOLLOWING AN in-depth assessment of its operation and long-term viability, Hawaiian Airlines is to close its 'Ohana by Hawaiian subsidiary due to the crippling impact of COVID-19. Its state-wide ATR freighter cargo service will also not be resumed. According to the Honolulu-based carrier, a decline in travel demand between neighbouring islands, along with quarantine measures implemented at a state- and country-wide level, resulted in an initial suspension of flights during 2020. The airline said "significant costs" and "numerous obstacles" would hamper any move to keep the subsidiary going. Peter Ingram, president and CEO at Hawaiian Airlines, said in a statement that the decision not to reinstate the service was considered seriously: "This is a heart-breaking decision, particularly for those of us who were involved in launching the business in 2014.
