Norway's Trondheim Airport is building a seawater exchange plant which will heat and cool its main terminal building and reduce its carbon emissions. The initiative is part of the energy saving project that started in 2010, will cost NOK60 million (€7.2 million) and is scheduled for completion in summer 2014. Enough energy will also be provided via the plant to also serve the nearby Radisson Blu and Rica Hell hotels, the Hellsenteret shopping centre, and any new buildings established in the airport city area. The plant will stretch one kilometre into the neighbouring fjord and effectively replace the oil and electric boilers currently used by the airport. Airport director, Per jarle Ingstad, says: "This initiative will allow us to save 75% of the energy we now use for heating and cooling our terminal buildings. "This is a very important contribution to our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint."
