An average 78in (198cm) of snow falls every year on the Gerald R Ford International Airport (IATA: GRR) - a pretty stable figure since 1948. However, it is having to cope with more wet snow and freezing rain than in years past. In response, the winter services team has adjusted its methods. During a typical winter, GRR suffers 12 storms, which is wet snow 75% of the time, with the remaining 25% dry snow and freezing rain.The earliest snowfall ever recorded in Grand Rapids, GRR's home, which is about 160 miles (257km) west of Detroit, was on October 12,1909. Its official winter season runs from November 15 to April 15.
