Boeing's 787 Dreamliner (Airways, January 2011, September 2010, March 2010 & August 2007) is truly the stuff that cliched dreams are made of. By now its advances are well known (Airways, June 2006): the unprecedented use of advanced carbon fiber composite construction resulting in massive fuel savings and durability; electrical systems that replace bleed air and hydraulics; raked wing tips and serrated engine nacelles carrying leading-edge Rolls-Royce or General Electric turbofans that can even be swapped between manufacturers in a 24-hour period; an active gust alleviation system which greatly smooths out the ride in turbulent conditions; and, of course, the ultra-revolutionary passenger experience from lower altitude pressurization to higher humidity levels and mood lighting.
