MADAGASCAR IS 425 miles (684km) to the west. Mauritius 117 miles (188km) to the east. The island is about as far from Europe as one can go: yet. it is a department of France. with the same status as any part of the French mainland in Europe. The aeronautical history of this remote place began in November 1929. when aviator Marcel Goulette set up the first air link between France and Reunion; his Farman F-192 landed in a field of the Gillot property, which would lend its name to the island's major airport.
