Second responders: A Thai International Airbus A330-300 (HS-TEF), operating flight TG679 from Guangzhou, China, had just touched down on Runway 19L at Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi when the right main bogie beam, a component that the European Aviation Safety Agency had warned about two years earlier, fractured. The airplane careened off the runway, winding up in the grass with one engine smoking and all slides deployed. Quickly following the emergency vehicles was a crane-sent to lift not the aircraft but two guys with paint-spraying equipment, who proceeded to black out the Thai name and logo wherever it appeared. A spokesperson glibly claimed that this was standard Star Alliance policy. It seemed like a good explanation-until a curious reporter contacted Star Alliance, whose spokesperson said, in effect, "Huh? What policy?" Thai subsequently announced that it would soon be inspecting its A330s-as soon as it finishes cleaning the black paint off HS-TEF.
