Dedicated research into Russian archives, an effort that could not have been for the fainthearted, has resulted in a complete revision of what little was known about pre-1946 civil aviation in the Soviet Union, and reveals a completely new world to Westerners. The first 80 or or so pages of Aeroflot Origins offers a general history, covering not only Aeroflot, but predecessors Deruluft, Junkers-Luftverkehr, Dobrolet, and others more obscure, plus various specialized concerns, including the aviation activities of the GULAG labor camp organization. Over the next 200 pages, all the Soviet-designed aircraft types of the period are described in detail, often with complete production lists. As well, all imported and license-built types are covered. The balance of the volume is taken up with-for the first time in print-the complete Soviet civil aircraft register, some 13,000 individual entries.
