Passenger loading bridges were pioneered at Burbank, California and London-Gatwick in the Thirties, and last May marked the 70th anniversary of the opening of Gatwick's 'Beehive' terminal, which had fully-enclosed, telescopic units at all its gates (Airways, November 1999). However, it was to be many years before the loading bridge became the ubiquitous piece of airport equipment it is today.
