As often happens as we grow older, we reach little milestones that give us pause. It is always small, seemingly innocuous actions that end up shaping our lives in ways we could not have fathomed at the time. Not long ago, 35,000 feet above the cloud-covered Atlantic, fighting headwinds as we returned from a week-long trip to Europe, I looked at the date and it occurred to me I had reached a milestone of my own. In the preceding week it had become exactly 30 years since I had passed my private pilot check ride and joined the ranks of licensed aviators. But, of course, my dream of becoming a pilot had all started much earlier.
