If the Qantas in-flight staff made their customary deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) announcement at the beginning of this flight, I must have tuned it out. I remembered it all too clearly from my inbound Qantas economy class flight where, for 14-plus hours, I tried to find a comfortable place to put my knees within the 31in (79cm) seat pitch. Perhaps they did the PA spiel at the same moment I figured out how to run the built-in massage unit in my 'Skybed' seat, and my subconscious knew that DVT would not be a problem for me on this flight. I had also tuned out the fact that we were an hour late for takeoff, with no information about the delay having been provided while we waited at the gate. (Strangely, the Brisbane Airport housekeepers chose to close the only nearby restrooms for cleaning, leaving 300 passengers with literally no place to 'go'.) Once onboard, the captain apologized for the delay, informing us that our US-bound airplane had been chosen for an extra-thorough security search.
