One of the Problems associated with operating an aircraft in a foreign country is, of course, the language. Yes, I know: The international language of aviation is English'. But try telling that to a policeman who is pointing a pistol at you through the window of your car, when you are stopped at a checkpoint on your way from the airport into Sana'a, the capital of Yemen, for example. If your Arabic is not up to speed, it is going to take longer than you would like to convince the guy of your credentials, particularly if you left them in the aircraft. I have spent over 20 years in Arabic-speaking countries and I am ashamed to say that I cannot even use the language to order a cold beer...but then, of course, you wouldn't, would you? The hamada (sandstone) plateau in Libya has been called the biggest airstrip in the world, 200 x 200mi (320 x 320km) of flat gravel plain. You can land a Pilatus Porter or a Twin Otter almost anywhere in the hamada. They have strong winds there too, of course. Nothing blocks the way of the winds, unless you leave your aeroplane there; and you should not do that unless it is well tied down, otherwise the wind will come and roll it up into a little ball- and then you will have to walk. Walking anywhere in Libya during the summer, where the temperature can be in excess of 120℉ (49℃), takes a long time, and there are a lot of people-the tragic crew of the Consolidated B-24D Liberator Lady Be Good, for example- who did not live to tell the tale.
