The ancient city of Cork on the southern coast of the Republic of Ireland has long vied with the capital, Dublin, for prominence. Although served directly by air from other points in the British Isles, Cork did not have a locally-based operator until April 28 this year, when Jetmagic began operations, thus providing a boost to the local economy by creating 145 new jobs. Indeed, summer 2003 may well be remembered in British commercial aviation circles as 'the summer of the start-up'. The low-cost approach to air travel has attracted new players to the fray (Airways, March 2003), fuelled by enthusiastic demand from the public.
