As the worldwide economy began to spiral into deep recession during 2008, airline analysts predicted that losses for global carriers would reach a staggering $ 77 billion. Indeed, by the first quarter of 2009, the International Air Transport Association reported that of the projected global loss, $2.8 billion of red ink would come from United States carriers alone. Weak yields and a spike in crude oil prices decimated balance sheets. Low-cost carriers JetBlue Airways and Southwest Airlines were expected to maintain profitability; however, few would have foreseen the performance of relatively unheralded Allegiant Air.
