Nestled amongst steel plants and railroad tracks, Gary/Chicago International Airport (IATA: GYY) in northwestern Indiana is no stranger to airline service. Fallen carriers such as Southeast Airlines, Hooters Air, and SkyBus Airlines all displayed the city on their route maps. Allegiant Air (see page 31) recently planned to launch scheduled flights, but abandoned the idea only a few hours before a celebratory press conference. While chartered airliners occasionally come and go, the small terminal usually sits dark and empty, keeping Gary's goal of being 'Chicago's third airport' stymied in the shadows ofO'Hare and Midway.
