The institute is about an hour's drive by Land Cruiser from Lodwar— capital of the Turkana District and the largest town in northwestern Kenya—over roads delineated only by tire tracks in the sand; I still can't figure out how drivers remember which way to go. Our flight today would take us 320mi (515km) south, into the southern hemisphere and Nairobi, where I would spend the afternoon and evening before returning to the airport the next day in preparation for a Kenya Airways flight to Amsterdam, connecting to New York via KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
