My new home in 1985 on St Croix, US Virgin Islands, proved that even paradise has a hidden orifice for eliminating waste. The condemned airport inn next door to Eastern Metro Express flight operations was. a 'first class' dump. 'First' because it was the first place of lodging in terms of proximity to the airplanes; and 'class' because that's where my entire ground school class chose to stay. That it was a dump was obvious even to the most casual observer. Worse still, it was located in the shadow of the island's rubbish dump. The inn's owner refused to stop renting rooms until bulldozers arrived to level the place. Nobody knew when that would happen. Progress in the Caribbean moved slower than road kill.
