Following the European EMPACT research program, VIRCAST was focused on three main scientific topics related to Direct Chill (DC) casting of aluminium alloys: hot tearing, as-cast microstructure formation and homogenisation-precipitation. A very large effort of more than 7 millions euros was spent on these different aspects organised in three work packages, including the integration of the various models into a common software platform and their validation on small and real casting experiments. The present contribution briefly summarises the main outcome of this program, as seen from an academic viewpoint.
