Almost half the aluminium processed in Germany is used in for traffic and transport applications. In 2003 the relative strength of this sector ensured that the aluminium industry was still able to achieve growth. In the field of castings it was even possible to announce a new production record. In light of all the figures cited and against the background of the economic environment is Germany, it is certainly not justified to speak of 2003 as a "triumphant" year, as the Joint Association of the Aluminium Industry did on the occasion of its annual report at the beginning of December. Developments in the markets relevant to the aluminium industry varied a great deal during the year.
