Aluminium hydroxide is used on a large scale for aluminium production and also in many other industrial applications. For such purposes, this important chemical raw material is usually produced by seed crystallisation from supersaturated aluminate liquors or by the neutralisation of such liquors with acids. This article shows that aluminium hydroxide can be precipitated electrochemically from alkaline aluminate liquors. In this method, electrolysis reduces the pH around the anode so that excess alkaline liquor is neutralised and aluminium hydroxide is then precipitated. This electrochemical process may therefore provide an alternative to the production methods used until now.
