Despite a fall-off in trade the year 2001 proved very successful for light metal foundries in France, as shown in a current survey carried out by the French foundry association "Les Fondeurs de France". Worldwide, the French foundry industry (all metals) occupied 7th place. The association itself has 570 member companies employing a total of 43,000 people, 14,201 of them in the light metals sector. This makes the foundry industry an important factor in France's economy. The survey relates mainly to the production of aluminium alloy castings. Although it also covers results from magnesium foundries, their fraction is very small and not comparable with the situation in Germany. Precision casting was not taken into account.
