A hollow aluminium profile that fractured along the extrusion seam during extrusion was investigated to determine the reason for the failure. A failure analysis showed that bad extrusion seam quality was obtained during extrusion due to a layer of contamination in the extrusion seam. The source of the failure seems to be contamination which has in some or other way entered into the interface between the two billets extruded in sequence.
