In a project undertaken jointly by designers, a manufacturer of spectacles and a metallurgist, new `designer' frames for spectacles have been developed using an aluminium alloy, and are now in production. The frames comply with the European standard for spectacle frames in force since 1998. Weighing only 1.5 grams, the frames can also claim to be the lightest mass-produced spectacle frames in the world. Three patents have been applied for or already granted for the design and production method of the two spectacle series PlatoPoint and PlatoLink.
