The use of fiberglass fabric as a filtration device for molten aluminum is not recent, but it has been improved. Since the early fifties, when fine mesh fiberglass began being used in casthouses, the development of in-line equipment such as degassing boxes, ceramic foam filters, and deep bed filters has improved the cleanliness of molten metal. The use of this type of in-line equipment, and constant market pressure for cleaner metal (fig. 1), has modified the function of the fiberglass fabric. It is still widely used, but its purpose now is for the macrofiltration of refractory particles or large oxide films, and for molten metal distribution.
