The behaviour of sealed and unsealed anodized aluminium specimens in the salt spray cabinet test was studied. The results are compared with those obtained by using other standard tests, electrochemical impedance spectros-copy (EIS) and transmission electron micrographs of ion beam-thinned anodic films, that were stripped from the aluminium substrate at the end of the salt spray exposure period. The results hardly allow one to discriminate between sealed and unsealed coatings because salt fog has a sealing effect on exposed unsealed specimens.
