Advanced emission control systems for the aluminium industry

Strict legislation and advanced fume control systems have drastically reduced the emissions from most primary aluminium smelters. Fluoride compounds emitted from aluminium reduction cells are the most harmful of these emissions. Earlier "wet" air pollution control systems have been abandoned in favour of closed-loop dry-fume treatment with direct fluoride recovery. The new systems use raw aluminium oxide as adsorbent and have reactors which are integrated in advanced fabric filters. Developments have led to high-effi- ciency reactors, long fabric life and hygienic filter maintenance. What is more, investment in such systems is paid back within 5 to 10 years, since valuable raw materials are recovered.
