摘要

Alstom's association with the aluminium industry spreads over many businesses and product lines -captive power plants, rectifier substations and air quality control solutions.Production of aluminium involves a two step separation process consisting of (a) refining of alumina-bearing raw materials to high purity alumina or possibly aluminium chloride and (b) conversion of high purity alumina ride or aluminium chloride to molten aluminium by high-temperature molten salt electrolysis. The process generates significant amount of solid wastes (red mud), gaseous emissions (fluoride, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon,particulates), and liquid effluents. The major environmental problems are associated with the emission of fluorides in both gaseous and particulate forms and sulfur dioxide emission, which impact human life and vegetation in the surrounding areas.
