Hydro has decided to invest in a full-scale pilot plant in Karmoy to demonstrate the world's most energy aluminium production. A final building decision depends on securing a power supply agreement. Through the technology pilot in Karmoy, Hydro aims to reduce energy consumption by 15% per kilogram aluminium produced compared with the world average. The pilot plant is designed with an production capacity of around 75,000 tpy. Start-up is scheduled for the second half of 2017. Project costs are estimated at NOK3.9bn (€455m), including NOK1.5bn in support from Enova.
