As the first of its type in Germany, ABB's robot gantry machine carries out all the loading and unloading for an automated line that produces cast housings. Up to four machine tools perform all the numerous drilling and milling operations. After the final machining two robots cleanse the housings at a washing station. Besides its short cycle time and high efficiency the production line is strikingly flexible, as is necessary since the seasonal variation of the number of housings processed ranges between 20 and 120 percent. To ensure a high utilisation level of the production line despite this, individual machining centres can work on other workpieces without interfering with the production process.
