India's state-owned National Aluminium Co. (Nalco) will start building the third phase of its brownfield expansion project in the eastern state of Orissa by early 2012. The project report for the third phase will be submitted in 2011, and the company has adequate finance to the fund the project itself. Phase II of the expansion is almost complete and the company has integrated the new aluminium smelting capacity, which was increased from 345,000 to 460,000 tpy. Bauxite mining has increased from 4.8m to 6.3m tpy, and will further expand to 9m tpy in the next stage. The company plans to increase its alumina refining capacity from 2.1m to 3m tpy in phase III, while aluminium smelting capacity will rise from 460,000 to 630,000 tpy and power generation will reach 1,700 MW from 1,200 MW. The third-phase expansion will require investment of Rs60 billion (USDl.42bn).
