UC Rusal has implemented a comprehensive programme to reduce costs, optimise the production processes and strengthen the company's position as one of the world's most cost-effective aluminium producers. The programme includes the following measures:rn1. Reduction of aluminium output by 500,000 tpy or about 11% of the total production by 1 April 2009, by closing unprofitable and environmentally challenging facilities; this includes the 180,000 tonnes reduction announced in December 2008.rn2. Alumina production cut by 3.45 million tpy or about 30% of the total production by mid-2009, by closing and reducing volumes at high cost alumina refineries; to date the produc-rntion level has already been reduced by 2.4m tonnes.
