Rarely was it as difficult to predict the economic trend at the start of a new year as it is this year. There is no question that the world's economy will suffer a serious damper but the extent of the downturn is apparently difficult to predict - there are very marked differences in the forecasts made by the economic crystal-gazers. One thing is clear though: the crisis will affect the highly industrialised nations more severely than the emerging economies. There is a threat of negative growth in the USA, western Europe and Japan, China and India will see a slight slowing down in what to date has been an impressive catching-up process, Russia, whose economic development has been strongly dependent on energy supply, is suffering from the fall in the price of oil and Brazil is feeling the effects of the fall in demand for raw materials and the weakness of the US economy.
