China has boosted speculation it is preparing a US$22bn plus share raid on BHP Billiton after Beijing's top planning agency promised to take greater control of the country's push to secure Australian iron ore assets. The Chinese Government's National Development' and Reform Commission (NDRC) wants a greater say in how state-backed investment companies chose their targets in Australia. This follows Chinese aluminium heavyweight Chinalco recently teaming with US firm Alcoa to buy a 9% stake in Rio Tinto.rnIn a session with reporters in London, BHP chief executive Marius Kloppers said, in view of China: "I'd be very surprised if 1 didn't wake up one morning to find out someone has crossed the one percent disclosable threshhold (The Wall Street Journal).
