According to Walstad, econometricsnis evidence of the empirical dimensionnof economics. Strictly speaking, em-npiricism refers to a methodology innwhich all hypotheses and theories mustnbe tested against observations of thennatural world rather than resting onlynon a priori reasoning, intuition, or rev-nelation. However, econometrics isnbased on the collection of data, whichnis not enough to really be empirical.nEconometrics is based mainly on anGaussian framework, and when econo-nmetricians observe some abnormalndata u0001data statistically outside a Gauss-nian distributionu0002, they use data miningnto ensure that all abnormal data havenan expected mean equal to zero.nI read the review of my book, ThenUncertainty in Physical Measure-nments, by D. M. Harrison in Am. J.nPhys. 77 u00019u0002, 862–863 u00012009u0002. The bal-nance of the review was not very posi-ntive. It is understandable that a re-nviewer may disagree with an author onnthe choice of topics and on their didac-ntic presentation, as well as on minornpoints, such as the length of the indexnand the quality of English. Critical re-nviews are useful to readers and stimu-nlating for authors.
