摘要

PGD is recommended for the following couples: * those who have family histories of inherited genetic disease * those in which the female is over 35 and, therefore, has an increased likelihood of producing eggs with an abnormal chromosome number * those in which the woman has experienced numerous miscarriages, suggesting an abnormal chromosome set coming from either the mother or father * those in which either the mother or father has chromosomal translocations (see below) * those who have experienced repeated IVF failure * those in which the male's infertility necessitates sperm injection (Marick, 2005) The first successful PGD procedure was reported in 1989 (Marick, 2005). Sex-linked traits are those found on either the X or Y chromosomes and include hemophilia and fragile X syndrome.n The activity is a role-playing exercise that simulates a congressional hearing being held to determine what law, if any, should be created governing PGD. (Genes for hair color and a fictional "musical gene" can be included to make the exercise more interesting.) One of the important aspects of this exercise is to get students to consider alternative points of view surrounding PGD.
