In years to come, few people will look back on 2009 with any sense of fondness. It was a year characterized by recession, rising unemployment and some of the toughest business conditions seen for a generation or more.rnIt is odd then that it was actually a rather good year for the stock markets. This months graph shows the markets' movement in 2009, and illustrates that following the low in March, it was a year of almost uninterrupted growth. Despite the sharp dip at the start of the year, the Dow ended up about 18 percent overall in 2009. More impressive was the NASDAQ, which achieved more than 40 percent growth.
