The height records of 48,589 conscriptsnborn in Jujuy between 1870 and 1960 were examined innorder to study the variation in adult male heightn(AMH) in terms of geographical altitude and surnames.nData were clustered by origin of surnames (divided intonnative and foreign names), decades, and according tonthe four Jujenean geographical regions distributednalong an altitudinal gradient (Puna, Quebrada, Valle,nand Ramal). The variation of surnames, geographicalnaltitude, and time on human height were examined bynanalysis of variance. Regardless of the drafting year,nindividuals in the four regions bearing foreign sur-nnames proved significantly taller (P < 0.001) than thosenwho had a native surname. Average height, regardlessnof ethnic group, presented a reverse relationship to geo-ngraphical altitude. A higher AMH was found in individ-nuals bearing foreign surnames in Jujuy and lower onesnin the population located in the highlands and bearingnnative surnames. Interregional and intergroup AMHnvariations would be affected by the complex interactionnbetween geographical altitude and factors associatednto it and by the ethnic characteristics of these popula-ntion as well.
