Like everyone else in the United States, members of the California Independent Petroleum Association have to pay taxes. But, asserted George Runner, a member of the State Board of Equalization, again like everyone, they should pay only their appropriate amount. Runner kicked off the general session at CIPA's annual convention, held June 6-9 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort, by examining whether California could tax itself into prosperity. While the state is an incredibly challenging place to do business, with problems related to taxation and regulatory policies, he said the underlying reasons why many people flocked to California over the decades-its climate, scenic landscapes and ocean-remained.
