摘要

Ever since Robert Hooke looked through a microscope at a slice of cork in the 17th century and described the little boxes or "cells" that he saw, cells have held a central place in biology. Knowledge of cell structure exploded in the early 19th century when improved microscopes provided a closer look at the tiny boxes. Wide-ranging studies confirmed that cells are the integral units of life and culminated in the formal introduction of the cell theory in the late 1830s by Matthias Schlei-den and Theodore Schwann, who concluded from observations of plants and animals, respectively, that all living things are composed of cells.
