摘要

Inevitably, we take the sun for granted, If it's un- clouded, that's good; if it's producing a beauty- ful sunset, that's even better. Its rising and set- ting govern the timetables and seasons of our lives; every vestige of life on earth depends on its continuing to shine. But as to just what it is or how far away it is, well, if you can't remember what you learned in grade school, you can always look it up on your CD-ROM encyclopedia. People once worshipped the sun as a god, and perhaps our own age could do with a little of the awe it once inspired.
