"The end of the Army of Northern Virginia began with the stroke of a pen." Michael Haskew opens his new book with that intriguing statement, referring to Ulysses S. Grant's signature on the guest register of Willard's Hotel on March 8, 1864, the day he arrived in Washington, D.C., to assume command of all the Union armies. But at that point the Army of Northern Virginia remained a viable fighting force, and it would take 13 months of hard fighting before its death certificate was signed and notarized.
