Long after the fighting has ceased, battlefields can be gruesome places. In one well-known example, a farmer plowing his field two weeks after the Battle of Antietam churned up a human arm. He had it embalmed for posterity and, nearly 150 years after its discovery, the arm was given this spring to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Md., by an anonymous donor who had acquired it from a private collection.
